Mike Elko shares insights on the Aggies’ offensive coordinator role before the Miami playoff matchup.

As Texas A&M moves forward in its College Football Playoff campaign, it faces a unique transitional period. Collin Klein, the Aggies’ offensive coordinator, finds himself at a crossroads. Before he embarks on his journey back to his alma mater, Kansas State, as head coach, he remains committed to leading the Aggie offense through what could be a thrilling playoff run.

In a recent press conference, Klein openly addressed the dual responsibilities awaiting him. He is not only tasked with crafting a game-winning strategy for A&M but also with building a coaching staff and recruiting for the Wildcats. “I need to ask coach [Bill] Snyder, because he could fit 26 hours in a day somehow,” Klein humorously remarked, alluding to the balancing act required during this critical time.

In the weeks ahead, Klein plans to manage his schedule meticulously. “During the day when I’m in College Station prepping for the playoff game, I’ll have responsibilities. And then anytime there’s a break and in the evenings, I’ll be coming back to Kansas to start building relationships with our players,” he explained.

Head coach Mike Elko also weighed in during his weekly press conference, expressing confidence in Klein’s ability to manage both demands. “It’s a very collaborative process that we go through on offense. I have a ton of confidence in Collin, in who he is as a man, and who he is as a competitor,” Elko stated. This shared trust between the head coach and offensive coordinator sets the stage for a focused playoff run.

Klein’s tenure has been marked by impressive achievements, and this season is no exception. Under his guidance, the Aggies have averaged an impressive 36.3 points per game, the highest since the 2013 season. With rising star quarterback Marcel Reed returning for the next season, the challenge for the next offensive coordinator will be maintaining this momentum and building upon the exceptional foundation Klein has laid.

As the search for Klein’s successor begins, wide receiver coach and co-offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins emerges as a frontrunner. Joining Elko’s staff in 2024 after a successful five-year stint at Alabama under Nick Saban, Wiggins carries a wealth of experience. Elko has openly praised Wiggins, affirming his capability: “I got a ton of respect for Holmon. He does a phenomenal job.” Elko emphasized the collaborative nature of coaching, stating, “This is to take nothing away from Collin — Collin’s phenomenal. But I think sometimes there’s a belief that it’s a one-man show. It’s never a one-man show.”

With the playoffs looming and new opportunities for Klein on the horizon, the upcoming weeks will be filled with high stakes and significant decisions for both Texas A&M and Kansas State. The ability to balance these responsibilities successfully will not only define Klein’s legacy at A&M but also shape the future of the Wildcats as he transitions into his new role.
