On December 15th, the Lao Men’s National Baseball Team concluded their journey at the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2025 in Thailand, finishing fifth in a rigorous round-robin tournament. With a record of 2 wins and 4 losses, their performance was a mix of thrilling victories and hard-fought battles.
One of the most striking aspects of the Lao team was its youthful roster. With an average age of just 22, Laos fielded one of the youngest squads in the tournament, consisting of 18 players, a roster that was among the smallest in the competition. Competing against teams featuring seasoned players with overseas training or prior professional experience posed a significant challenge for Laos.
For the first time, the team welcomed overseas-based athletes, notably the Lao-American brothers, David and Davy Phrathep, who joined midway through the tournament. Their addition brought valuable experience, yet the majority of the team was crafted through Laos’ local nurturing programs, embodying the future of baseball in the country.
Challenging Schedule Tests the Team’s Limits
Arriving shortly before their opening match against Singapore, the team faced an unforgiving schedule, playing six games in just five days with no rest days in between. This demanding lineup tested their endurance and resilience right from the start.
Throughout the tournament, Laos showcased their potential by registering impressive wins against Vietnam, with a remarkable score of 16–0, and Malaysia, where they claimed a 9–5 victory. The Phrathep brothers made significant contributions to the victory against Malaysia, demonstrating their ability to elevate the team. However, the Lao squad experienced narrow setbacks against powerhouse teams, including a heart-wrenching 3–4 loss to Indonesia and defeats by the host nation Thailand, the Philippines, and Singapore.
A team representative aptly described the dynamic of the squad: “Literally boys playing against grown men. This team never stopped fighting. To come off a bus, sleep a few hours, and then compete against the best in ASEAN is nothing short of heroic. We showed that Laos belongs on this stage.” Such statements encapsulate the essence of their spirited efforts throughout the tournament.
Baseball’s Rapid Growth in Laos
Emerging onto the scene in 2013, baseball in Laos began with Korean organizer Sangwook Jae forming the first team consisting of just 12 teenagers. The establishment of the Laos Baseball Federation in 2017 marked a significant milestone, and today, the national team enjoys its highest-ever World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) ranking at 47th.
The development of baseball in Laos has been greatly supported by volunteer initiatives and international collaborations, particularly from Korea. One noteworthy program, Global Brothers, focuses on providing living support to athletes while promoting sports development, leadership, and teamwork, underscoring the importance of community engagement in nurturing talent.
Federation Calls for Greater Support to Build Future Talent
Recognizing the potential of their young team, the Lao Baseball Federation has called for increased support from various stakeholders. They urge the Ministry of Education and Sports, the private sector, and the broader public to contribute resources aimed at enhancing training, equipment, facilities, nutrition, and opportunities for international competitions. They emphasize the significance of school and community involvement, alongside partnerships with the Lao diaspora, to fortify the sport’s development.
“Laos has a young, hungry team with proven potential,” the federation stated. “The progress since 2013 shows what is possible when passion meets opportunity. With strategic investment, this team can grow into a consistent regional contender and inspire the next generation.” This vision reflects a hopeful outlook on the future of baseball in Laos, building on the lessons learned during the SEA Games 2025 and demonstrating the growth potential embedded within the team.
The participation of Laos in the SEA Games 2025 showcases their ongoing commitment to establishing a presence in regional baseball competitions, and their journey is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the nation’s budding athletes.
