Summerland Athlete Joins Canadian Olympic Bobsleigh Team as Coach

A New Chapter in Bobsleigh

In an exciting development for Canadian winter sports, Justin Kripps, a decorated athlete from Summerland, has been appointed as a coach for Team Canada’s bobsleigh squad competing at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. This announcement marks a significant milestone in Kripps’ career, showcasing his leadership potential after years of impressive performances on the track.

Kripps’ Impressive Athletic Background

Kripps is no stranger to the competitive world of bobsleigh. Throughout his career, he has represented Canada at the highest levels, participating in three Winter Olympics. His standout moment came during the PyeongChang 2018 Games, where he clinched a gold medal in the two-man bobsleigh event alongside teammate Alexander Kopacz. This victory not only solidified Kripps’ status as an elite athlete but also brought immense pride to the Canadian bobsleigh community.

In addition to his Olympic gold, Kripps has also garnered a bronze medal in the four-man bobsleigh event at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. His ability to perform under pressure was exemplified when his team narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal by less than one-third of a second in PyeongChang. Kripps has also earned silver in the two-man event at the 2017 World Championships, as well as bronze in the mixed team event in 2012, making him a well-rounded competitor with a wealth of experience.

Transitioning to Coaching

After a remarkable 16-year career, Kripps announced his retirement from competitive bobsleigh in the summer of 2022. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to wear the maple leaf and represent Canada globally. “It’s been my greatest challenge and the most rewarding adventure of my life,” he shared. His transition from athlete to coach holds promise, as he brings firsthand knowledge of the challenges and triumphs that come with high-stakes competition.

The Coaching Team

Kripps will be joining an experienced coaching staff, which includes fellow former athlete Lyndon Rush and coach Chris Spring. Together, they will work to guide the next generation of bobsleigh athletes as they prepare for the Winter Olympics. Team dynamics will play a crucial role in shaping the strategy and performance of the squad, and Kripps’ insights from years of competition will be invaluable in this regard.

Leadership and Vision for Team Canada

Jesse Lumsden, also a former bobsleigh athlete, has been appointed as the team leader for the Olympic coaching and support staff. He emphasizes the importance of a diverse and dedicated team, powered by experienced leaders like Kripps. Lumsden stated, “This group of athletes are fiercely determined to achieve their performance goals and deliver results on the ultimate sporting stage.” His vision for nurturing talent and fostering a culture of excellence is instrumental as the team gears up for competition.

Timing and Competition Dates

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics are set to take place from February 6 to February 22, providing an exciting platform for athletes to showcase their skills. The bobsleigh events will occur from February 12 to 22, where fans around the world will eagerly anticipate thrilling races and intense competition. Team Canada, under the guidance of its seasoned staff, is poised to make a significant impact on the Olympic stage.

A Bright Future Ahead

As the bobsleigh squad embarks on this journey to the Winter Olympics, all eyes will be on Kripps and his fellow coaches to harness the potential of their athletes. With a blend of experienced leadership and fresh talent, Team Canada aims to continue its legacy of excellence in bobsleigh, striving for both personal and national achievements in the upcoming competitions.
