The Present Pillars organization in Benton Harbor recently celebrated its fourth annual Pillar Awards Gala, a heartfelt event designed to recognize men who have significantly improved the community over the past year. Held at the vibrant Four Winds Casino, the gala offered a night filled with food, music, dancing, and reflections on the year gone by.

Communications coordinator Nick Gunn expressed excitement about the event, noting, “It was amazing. There was well over 200 people that attended the event. It was packed.” This enthusiastic turnout underlines the community’s support for the organization’s mission, which focuses on uplifting fathers and their families.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Pillar of the Year Award to Charlie Patterson. As a case manager for teen parents at the Berrien County Health Department, Patterson has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to mentorship and support within the community. Gunn described Patterson as “an amazing person” who has dedicated a significant portion of his life to guiding and assisting fathers in need.

Patterson himself emphasized the importance of service, often telling young dads he works with, “Dollars Don’t Make Dads.” His perspective resonates powerfully, reinforcing that being a father is about presence and guidance rather than financial contribution.

In addition to the Pillar of the Year Award, several other honors were distributed during the gala. The Legendary Pillar Awards went to the Reverend Leamon Terrell, Donald Pearson, and Glenn Yarbrough, who have all made notable contributions to the community. Meanwhile, the Mentor award was given to Trevin Alexander, and Sergeant Reginald Gee of the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety received the Community Impact Award. The title of Sports Dad of the Year was proudly awarded to John Sams.

Present Pillars Director James Gunter also took the opportunity to address attendees, sharing exciting news about the organization’s future. He announced that Present Pillars has found a new building, promising further details to be revealed soon, indicating growth and an expanded capacity to serve the community.
