District Athletic Boards select Scholar-Athlete scholarship recipients; OHSAA sends $1,250 to each high school
COLUMBUS, Ohio (8-6-25) – The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) in partnership with its six District Athletic Boards is proud to announce the distribution of $200,000 to 200 outstanding recent high school graduates through its Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Program. This initiative not only underscores the commitment of these organizations to recognizing athletic excellence but also fosters educational aspirations among student-athletes.
A major feature of this scholarship program is the allocation of an additional $1,250 to each member high school, totaling a remarkable $1,020,000. This effort aims to support athletic departments in covering various expenses, including equipment purchases, uniforms, transportation for games, officiating costs, and initiatives aimed at promoting good sportsmanship and positive fan behavior. The funds are drawn from the OHSAA’s newly established Athletic Enrichment Fund, which started in 2023 with the intent of enhancing the athletic experience for student-athletes across Ohio.
Each of the 200 scholarship recipients will receive a $1,000 award, a continuation of last year’s efforts where the same amount was distributed. This marks the second straight year of such distribution, with the $200,000 fund being the highest in the program’s 31-year history, showcasing a sustained commitment to supporting young athletes in their educational journeys.
OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute commented on the significance of this achievement, stating, “These scholar-athletes represent the very best of high school athletics. Our District Athletic Boards, Board of Directors, and OHSAA staff congratulate them on all their accomplishments and wish them well as they work toward their educational and career goals.” His words reflect the organization’s pride in the scholarship honorees and the importance of athletics in shaping responsible and accomplished individuals.
Scholar-Athlete Selection Process
The selection of scholar-athlete recipients follows a meticulous point system that evaluates students based on a variety of criteria. These include their grade-point averages, class rankings, community service participation, varsity letters earned, and individual or team athletic honors. The number of scholarships allotted to each district corresponds with the number of schools within that region, and the selection process is overseen by special committees within each of OHSAA’s six athletic districts. It is worth noting that candidates who receive athletic scholarships from NCAA Division I or II institutions or are appointed to military academies are ineligible for this particular award, ensuring that the awards are given to a diverse group of deserving athletes.
