James Robb-Kennedy is not your average university student. Currently studying Kinesiology at the University of Guelph-Humber, he is also a dedicated rugby player with the Humber Hawks. What makes him stand out is his unwavering commitment to making the world a better place through the power of sport. In a remarkable feat, James raised $10,000 for charity by completing an ultramarathon, running from Barrie, Ontario, to Toronto’s iconic CN Tower.

The Ultramarathon Experience

When asked about the inspiration behind his incredible run, James reflected on his experiences during the pandemic. Alongside a close friend, he embarked on a unique initiative: the “100 Days of Cold.” They jumped into the icy waters of Barrie’s lake daily, using social media to raise awareness about youth homelessness. Their local efforts garnered attention from news outlets and drew supporters from the community. This initiative sparked the idea of an ultramarathon, each step fueled by the desire to bring attention to a pressing social issue.

“Failure wasn’t an option,” James recalls, speaking of his mental and physical preparations. Motivated by the hundreds of homeless youth in his community, he understood that their daily struggles were more daunting than his ultramarathon would ever be. The run commenced at 1 a.m. with inspiring words from the founder of Youth Haven Canada and a captivating personal story shared by a youth supported by the organization.

The Numbers Behind the Challenge

Completing the 104.7 km run in 16 hours and 51 minutes, James and his friend clocked in around 130,000 steps and burned about 8,000 calories. But the numbers were mere statistics; it was the impact of their journey that mattered most. By raising over $10,000, they realized their efforts would provide essential resources, such as housing and food, for vulnerable youth through Youth Haven Canada.

Supporting Youth with Critical Resources

The funds raised will directly support programs designed to help youths transition from homelessness to stable living situations. Youth Haven offers essential resources like clothing, food, and career guidance. “These programs help youth find jobs and manage their mental and physical health,” James shared. It’s a lifeline for many, transforming lives and instilling hope within a community that often feels overlooked.

Bridging Academic Knowledge and Practical Experience

While James was initially a Fitness and Health Promotion student, his journey into the Kinesiology program has broadened his understanding of physical preparation and injury management. He reflected on how the academic knowledge enhanced his physical training for the ultramarathon. Their structured planning and nutritional strategies were informed by what he learned, equipping him and his companion to handle the grueling challenge ahead.

Rugby: More Than Just a Game

In addition to his charity work, James also plays rugby for the Humber Hawks, a commitment that adds depth to his university experience. Participating in a team sport has taught him invaluable lessons about community, empathy, and leadership. “Every individual has a unique story,” he says, emphasizing the importance of kindness and understanding. This philosophy was shared by one of his coaches: being a good athlete is important, but being a good person is paramount.

As a captain of the rugby team, James embraces this ethos, seeing it as a guiding principle in both sport and life. His leadership style is rooted in acceptance and support, which not only drives team success but also inspires his peers to engage with community challenges.

Looking ahead, James envisions sports as a powerful tool for social change. He aspires to become a physical education teacher, fostering a culture of participation and teamwork among his future students. “Sport is more than just competition; it teaches essential life skills,” he asserts. Through physical activity, he hopes to empower individuals to overcome struggles, enhancing their overall well-being.
