GBV: Initiative Encourages Men’s Participation in the Pursuit of Gender Equity

### The Call to Action: Men as Allies in Gender Equality

A women’s advocacy group known as the Male Feminist Network (MFN) is mobilizing Nigerian men to actively participate in the fight against gender discrimination and gender-based violence (GBV). In a nation where gender inequality is rampant, MFN emphasizes that true change necessitates the involvement of men as allies rather than oppressors.

### The Current Landscape of Gender Inequality

During a recent press briefing in Uyo, facilitated by the Youth for Change Initiative and supported by the Value Rebirth Empowerment Initiative and the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (CentreLSD), Peace Edem, the Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Cross River States Coordinator of MFN, lamented Nigeria’s troubling position in the Global Gender Gap Report for 2023. Ranking 130th out of 146 countries, Nigeria faces high levels of maternal mortality and a surge in GBV cases. Edem asserted that men must step up to reverse these trends and foster a society devoid of fear and discrimination.

### Redefining Masculinity

Edem passionately argued that gender equality should not be viewed solely as a women’s issue. “Every man has a woman he loves—whether mother, sister, wife, daughter, or colleague. Yet, these women often face struggles against inequality and abuse,” he stated. Through MFN, the organization aims to redefine masculinity, urging men to reject traditional norms that perpetuate violence and discrimination. Their slogan, “enough is enough,” is a rallying cry for men to become protectors, not perpetrators; partners, not oppressors.

### Educating Through Advocacy

The Male Feminist Network is committed to creating a new generation of male advocates capable of challenging harmful societal norms. Edem emphasized the importance of understanding that empowering women enhances families, communities, and nations rather than threatening men’s roles. The organization’s efforts are not aimed at undermining tradition but rather addressing traditional practices that are harmful and not mutually beneficial, including early child marriage, female genital mutilation, body shaming, and harmful widowhood practices.

### The Role of Media in Changing Narratives

Speaking at the event, Anietie Bassey (Esq), President of the Male Advocate Unit of the GBV Management Committee in Akwa Ibom, articulated the media’s powerful role in promoting gender equality. He stressed that media platforms could help cultivate a more positive narrative surrounding gender justice, thereby influencing men’s mindsets. “It’s the media’s duty to create awareness and encourage men to embrace healthy co-existence,” he said, underscoring the importance of changing societal attitudes to foster equality.

### A Collective Responsibility

Usoro Peter, Senior Program Officer at the Abundant Word of Faith Foundation, echoed the call to action. He urged all stakeholders—churches, families, and communities—to participate actively in eliminating traces of GBV and discrimination. Peter emphasized the need for intentional advocacy, mentorship, and community engagement to support policies that ensure dignity and equality for women and girls.

### In Summary

The Male Feminist Network is undoubtedly pioneering a vital movement in Nigeria aimed at engaging men as allies in the advocacy for gender equality. Through education, redefined masculinity, and collective responsibility, the Network is making strides toward a future where gender discrimination and violence become relics of the past, paving the way for a society rooted in equality and respect for all.
