After a Devastating Injury and Major Surgery, Annemé Defied the Odds to Represent South Africa on the World Stage
South Africa (07 August 2025) – When 21-year-old Annemé first stepped into a kickboxing ring seven years ago, she never imagined that the sport would one day take her all the way to the international stage. But today, after overcoming a devastating injury, she is preparing to represent South Africa at the Seniors & Masters World Kickboxing Championships in Abu Dhabi this November.
In early 2024, during a national competition, Annemé faced a heartbreaking setback: a severe ACL tear. The injury was not only painful but also had the potential to jeopardize her entire athletic career. Following a knee reconstruction surgery in June, the prognosis was daunting. Annemé was instructed to refrain from any high-impact activities for at least nine months, a grueling timeline for someone who had dedicated her life to a sport she loved.
What followed was an extraordinary journey characterized by both physical and mental challenges. Initially, even simple tasks like walking to the bathroom required assistance. Annemé’s spirit, however, burned bright. She began rigorous physiotherapy sessions determined to regain her strength and mobility. Each session was a test of resilience, but with a fierce determination and unwavering willpower, she chose to fight back against the odds.
By February 2025, Annemé received the green light to return to kickboxing. She wasted no time getting back into the ring. Within months, she competed in the 2025 South African Kickboxing Championships, demonstrating her unwavering commitment and fight. The outcome? Two silver medals, showcasing not just her talent but her incredible journey of recovery and determination.
Now, Annemé’s remarkable comeback story has reached a new milestone: she has been selected to don the green and gold at the World Championships in Abu Dhabi, where she will face some of the best kickboxers in the world. While her spirit remains unbroken, the financial implications of this opportunity loomed large. The costs associated with flights, accommodation, competition fees, and travel documents quickly added up, presenting a significant barrier to her dreams.
To bridge this financial gap, Annemé’s family has launched a BackaBuddy campaign. This initiative is a call to action for individuals, businesses, and sports enthusiasts to rally around Annemé as she embarks on this incredible journey. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a big impact on her ability to compete on the world stage.
Annemé’s story transcends the realm of sports; it embodies the essence of perseverance and the belief that anything is possible when you refuse to give up. Her journey has already inspired those around her, and with the upcoming World Championships, she is positioned to motivate and inspire millions more across the globe.
