Four Programs Receive Coach of the Year Honors for 2024-25 Season

Dartmouth Celebrates Coaching Excellence in 2024-25: A Year of Achievement

In the heart of Hanover, New Hampshire, the Dartmouth College athletic programs have made strides that resonate far beyond the ivy-covered walls of its campus. The 2024-25 academic year has been marked by an impressive array of accomplishments, with Dartmouth coaches and coaching staffs earning four coveted conference Coach of the Year awards. These accolades cover a diverse set of sports, showcasing the excellence and dedication of the teams and coaching staff alike.

Growth on the Hardwood: Men’s Basketball Achievement

Under the guidance of Head Coach David McLaughlin, the Dartmouth men’s basketball team experienced a transformative season. With 14 wins, they marked an improvement of eight games from the previous year, finishing with a .519 overall winning percentage and a .571 conference record. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first time since the 1999 season that the program has finished above .500 in both overall and league play.

The highlights of the season were significant, with the Big Green clinching their first-ever berth in Ivy Madness, securing the No. 3 seed. Victories over formidable opponents, including Boston College from the ACC and convincing home wins against Vermont and Cornell, underscored the resilience and skill of the squad. McLaughlin’s leadership has not only elevated the team’s performance but has also invigorated the spirit of Dartmouth basketball.

A Historic Triumph in Men’s Hockey

Reid Cashman, the Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men’s Hockey, guided his team to an impressive 8-2 record against Ivy League rivals, which played a significant role in clinching their 15th Ivy League title. This triumph marked the program’s first Ivy title since 2007 and the first outright title since 1980. The Big Green’s overall record of 18-13-2, alongside a conference mark of 12-9-1, paved the way for a second consecutive trip to Lake Placid for the ECAC Hockey tournament.

The road to this title was paved with tenacity and teamwork, as the coaching staff instilled a culture of excellence and determination within the players. Cashman’s strategic approach to coaching has not only reaped immediate rewards but has also set a solid foundation for future success.

Resurgence in Men’s Lacrosse

Continuing the wave of recognition, the Dartmouth men’s lacrosse program earned Coach of the Year honors, led by Sean Kirwan and his dedicated staff. The Big Green posted an 8-5 overall record, their most wins since 2006. Notably, this season also marked the highest number of conference victories since 2010, further solidifying the team’s renaissance.

Dartmouth achieved national ranking for the first time since 2007, a testament to their growth and competitive edge. The thrilling overtime victory against No. 16 Penn in Ivy League play stands out as a highlight, showcasing the resilience and talent of the players. Kirwan’s leadership has remarkably elevated Dartmouth lacrosse to new heights, revitalizing a program with a rich history.

Nordic Skiing Under Exceptionally Talented Leadership

Adding to the accolades, Men’s Nordic Head Coach Brayton Osgood ’03 was awarded the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Coach of the Year. Osgood played a key role in guiding the team through a competitive season where a first-year skier claimed EISA Nordic Rookie of the Year honors. His coaching impact extended beyond newcomers; seasoned athletes also shone on the circuit.

Every EISA Nordic race of the season was claimed by a Dartmouth athlete, with remarkable accomplishments featuring five race wins shared among competitors. Veterans Luke Allan and John Steel Hagenbuch distinguished themselves further by becoming EISA discipline leaders in freestyle and classic categories, respectively. Osgood’s commitment to fostering talent across experience levels demonstrates his exceptional coaching prowess and dedication.

National Recognition for Coaching Excellence

As an icing on the cake, Dartmouth’s coaching staff achieved five separate national Coach of the Year honors this season, reflecting the exceptional standards set by all athletic programs. These accolades are a testament to the hard work and commitment put forth by the entire coaching staff and their unwavering dedication to the student-athletes.

The 2024-25 season has not only highlighted the exemplary achievements of Dartmouth’s coaches but has also inspired a renewed enthusiasm among students, alumni, and fans alike. As teams continue to build on their successes, the future looks bright for Dartmouth athletics, promising even more remarkable stories of achievement and growth in the years to come.
