GOODWELL, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State football team is making headlines not just for their on-field performance but also for their academic prowess. Recently, four remarkable student-athletes were honored as CSC Academic All-District honorees. This achievement speaks volumes about the balance these players strike between athletics and academics, a rare feat in collegiate sports.
Celebrated Players
The four players recognized this year are Rylan Johnson, Dillon Laurer, Jake Morones, and Nate Orta. This marks a significant milestone for the Oklahoma Panhandle State football program, as it is the most academic honors they have garnered under the modern CSC Academic All-District format since its inception in 2022. Furthermore, these accolades represent the highest count for the football program in over six years.
Rylan Johnson
Rylan Johnson, a junior running back from Tyrone, Oklahoma, has not only excelled on the football field but has also achieved senior academic status while pursuing a degree in biochemistry. He earned recognition as a Second-Team All-SAC player this season, finishing fourth in the conference for rushing yards. His standout moments included a remarkable 50-yard rush and two rushing touchdowns. Notably, on October 18, Johnson significantly contributed to the Aggies’ highest single-game rushing performance in over a decade.
Dillon Laurer
Senior wide receiver Dillon Laurer from Downey, California, has proven himself a consistent threat in the Aggies’ passing game. He amassed 295 receiving yards along with two touchdowns this season, showcasing his skills both as a receiver and as a key element in the return game. Laurer also recorded impressive stats with nine kickoff returns, accumulating an additional 216 yards. His dedication to both football and academics is evident, as he is majoring in health and physical education.
Jake Morones
Jake Morones, a linebacker from Paso Robles, California, has made notable contributions on the defensive side of the ball. Over the course of ten games, he amassed 52 combined tackles, including two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and a sack. His ability to balance rigorous coursework in industrial technology with the demands of college football is commendable, particularly since he recorded the highest GPA among the four honorees.
Nate Orta
Sophomore linebacker Nate Orta hails from Lubbock, Texas, and has established himself as a cornerstone of the Aggies’ defense. Finishing the season with a team-high 73 tackles, Orta also notched 6.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, and an interception. His crucial sack during the Week 1 game against Peru State laid the groundwork for a successful season. In the classroom, Orta is focusing on a degree in business management, further emphasizing his commitment to academic achievement.
Importance of the CSC Academic All-America Program
The College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District program aims to acknowledge student-athletes who excel both in their respective sports and academics. Nominations for this prestigious award are submitted by the sports information department of each institution, ensuring that candidates meet rigorous standards.
To qualify, student-athletes must have achieved at least sophomore academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.50 or higher. Additionally, they are required to participate in a minimum of 90 percent of their team’s games or start in at least 66 percent throughout the season.
Looking Ahead
A select few of the Academic All-District awardees will move forward for consideration on the Academic All-America ballot, with Rylan Johnson representing the Aggies in this next phase. The Academic All-America Team winners will be unveiled on January 27, showcasing even more talent and academic excellence among collegiate athletes.
