This winter, Newtown High School’s indoor track program welcomes a new leader as Coach David Warren steps into the role with enthusiasm and a wealth of experience. A former collegiate athlete, Warren comes with an impressive 15 years of coaching experience, having previously led the track team at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull. His athletic journey began at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, where he excelled in both track and football. In addition to coaching at the high school level, Warren has also contributed to USA Track and Field as a private coach, specializing in speed and plyometrics training.

Warren’s transition into this leadership role comes with high expectations. “I’m very excited about the direction of the indoor track and field program and the way the student-athletes have approached training,” he remarked. His admiration for the team’s focus, work ethic, and goal-oriented mindset sets a positive tone for the upcoming season. “The commitment and energy these student-athletes bring every day has been outstanding,” he added, indicating a promising environment for growth and excellence.

A Robust Roster

The indoor track and field team is set to thrive this winter, boasting one of the largest rosters with over 128 athletes across the boys’ and girls’ teams. This diverse group features a blend of experienced leaders, multi-sport athletes, and emerging talent, all contributing to an atmosphere ripe for success.

At the forefront of this talented roster are the team captains. Natilie DelCampo stands out as a multi-sport athlete who balances her athletic commitments with a love for baking and travel, offering a steady presence on the team. Alongside her, Marcela Corral brings years of track experience, having been involved in the sport since first grade. Known for her appreciation of teamwork, Corral also has a flair for music and adventuring. Violet Assante-LaBash, entering her third year with the program, has demonstrated remarkable athletic success. Renowned for her first-place finishes, she is also an accomplished artist and will continue her athletic and academic career at Bates College.

Experienced Senior Leaders

The support from experienced senior leaders adds a layer of stability and competitiveness to both the boys’ and girls’ teams. Nadia Andrew, a four-year indoor track athlete and future college tennis player, showcases consistent performance and competitiveness, while Natalie McLean, a three-sport captain committed to Division I lacrosse at LIU, embodies elite leadership across varying sports seasons.

On the boys’ side, Bryce Maddox emerges as a pivotal figure, anchoring the sprint group as a proven state-level competitor. He balances his athletic achievements with academic responsibilities, serving as co-president of the National Honor Society. With two school records to his name, Maddox brings maturity and focus, vital attributes for a budding champion.

Strength Across Events

The boys’ team is fortified by a strong senior core featuring Grady Marks, Justyn Gonzalez, and Danniel Teixeira, all multi-sport athletes who also bring their talents from football to the indoor track. Will Speiser adds depth with his dedication as a shot-put athlete, enhancing the throws segment. Collectively, this sprint group is poised to challenge school records and contend for a state title in the 4×200 relay, provided they can synchronize their efforts.

Warren expresses optimism for the season ahead. “With strong leadership, depth across events, and a culture centered on accountability and continuous improvement, the outlook for the indoor season is optimistic,” he stated. His vision for the team revolves around competing at a high level and hitting their peak during the championship season.

Upcoming Season

As the indoor track season commences, the first competitive meet is scheduled at Bethel on Saturday, January 3—a date that promises excitement for both athletes and fans alike. Under Warren’s guidance, the team is set to forge a new chapter, blending experience and ambition in hopes of achieving remarkable feats on the track.
