Priest River High School Volleyball Team: A Season of Promise

Last Season’s Performance

The Priest River High School volleyball team, affectionately known as the Lady Spartans, concluded last season with a record of 10-10, securing 4th place in the 3A Central Idaho League. This marked a significant improvement for the team, which had struggled in previous years. Under the guidance of head coach Katlyn Ward, who is entering her third year at the helm, the Lady Spartans found their rhythm and made waves in the district championship.

Coaching Staff

The team is supported by a dedicated coaching staff that includes assistant coaches Lindsay Troudt and Heidi Luckey, both of whom contribute their expertise to guide the players. Notably, all three coaches are graduates of Priest River High, which fosters a deep-rooted passion for the team and a commitment to developing local talent.

Key Returners

As the team transitions into the new season, they are bolstered by several key returning players who had standout performances last year. Senior Jayda Storro, a two-time All-Central Idaho League selection, will continue to shine as the team’s setter and right-side hitter. Storro impressively recorded 307 assists and 43 aces last season. Joining her is fellow senior Toni Marinello, also a two-time All-League selection, who led the team with 305 digs and 254 serve receptions.

Other significant returners include:

  • Aleigha Jensen (MH): A senior middle hitter, Jensen recorded an impressive 67 blocks and 63 kills in 2024.
  • Raygn Turner (OH): A junior outside hitter and a Daily Bee Athlete of the Week honoree last season, Turner contributed 92 kills and 212 digs.
  • Kenadie Kingery (MB/RS): The senior middle blocker and right-side hitter will play a vital role alongside junior defensive specialist Callie Stanger (DS/RS).

New Faces on the Roster

As the Lady Spartans gear up for the new season, several promising newcomers are eager to make their mark. Sophomore McKinley Burgess-Duquette stands out as a full-time newcomer, while freshmen Hadley Sandau and juniors Haylee Jepson-Church and Jasmine Stark are also expected to contribute significantly. The infusion of new talent adds excitement and potential for the season ahead.

Outlook for the Season

With a core of experienced players and a few new faces, the Lady Spartans have a realistic shot at capturing their first district championship in the 3A CIL. The leadership of Storro and Marinello should set a strong example for the team, promoting a culture of collaboration and mutual growth. Coach Ward is optimistic about the season, stating, “We have an older team this year, which is great because we’ve had a younger one the last couple of seasons. Hopefully, this is our year and we can get it done.”

Anticipated Matchups

One of the most anticipated matchups of the season will be against their rivals, Kellogg. The Lady Spartans’ fierce competition with Kellogg adds an additional layer of excitement for fans and players alike, as the teams vie for supremacy in their league.

Player Insights

The atmosphere within the team appears highly positive, as both returning players express their enthusiasm about the upcoming season. Storro remarked, “I’m excited because we have a bunch of new girls coming up to varsity — I’m excited to play with them. I like how energetic our team is.” Marinello echoed this sentiment, saying, “I think we have a really good chance of going to state. We have a lot of potential heading into this season. We all have a special bond both on and off the court, no matter what happens.”
