Launch of the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Network (SEJUN) in Malawi
A transformative wave is sweeping through Malawi with the recent launch of the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Network (SEJUN). This new Non-Governmental Organisation aims to foster inclusivity, encourage dialogue, and advocate for evidence-based policies in sexual and reproductive health and rights. As a multi-faceted network, SEJUN is set to empower communities and influence policies that shape the lives of many in Malawi.
Vision and Mission
SEJUN envisions a robust civil society that prioritizes sexual and reproductive justice and gender equality as cornerstones of inclusive and sustainable national development. The network comprises 11 diverse members, united by the shared goal of improving access to accurate information and quality services related to sexual and reproductive health.
Core Values
The guiding principles of SEJUN emphasize solidarity, inclusivity, diversity, and respect. These values highlight its commitment to gender equality and equity, along with transparency and accountability. The network recognizes that these foundational tenets are essential for achieving broader societal change.
Voices for Change
Chairperson Mirriam Chilemba articulates SEJUN’s commitment: “We aim to ensure that everyone—regardless of gender, age, disability, or social status—has access to accurate information and the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies without fear or discrimination.” This profound assertion underscores the organization’s mission to create equitable conditions for all, where sexual and reproductive rights are not just theoretical but practically experienced.
Beyond Paper Rights
In her address to the media, Chilemba emphasized that true justice transcends mere legislation—it requires tangible experiences of rights in everyday life, free from discrimination. She noted that while sexual and reproductive rights are fundamental human rights, many individuals, particularly women, girls, and marginalized communities, continue to face significant hurdles in realizing these rights.
Identifying Barriers
Chilemba elaborated that the barriers hindering access to sexual and reproductive health services are diverse. They are not solely medical but also deeply rooted in social, economic, cultural, and structural factors. From limited access to essential services to harmful societal norms and legal limitations, these obstacles silences voices and stifle opportunities for meaningful choices.
A Platform for Solidarity
SEJUN aims to represent a unified commitment among organizations and communities to amplify marginalized voices and promote effective collaboration. “We are not here to compete; we were born from a recognition that injustices do not exist in isolation,” Chilemba remarked. This reflects SEJUN’s dedication to being not just an institution, but a platform for collective action and hope for those whose voices have long been overlooked.
Network Composition
Among the member organizations of this transformative network are the Religious Leaders Network for Choices, Umunthu, Right to Rights, Young Women Network, Nyale, and Mulanje Youth Organisation. Together, they form a formidable alliance poised to advocate for change and secure sexual and reproductive rights for all.
Through efforts like those initiated by SEJUN, the landscape of sexual and reproductive rights in Malawi stands to shift significantly, promoting a healthier, more equitable society. Each member’s dedication towards these ideals enriches the network, paving a path toward genuine inclusivity and justice.
