The Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame is gearing up for an exciting celebration as eight new inductees prepare to take center stage at their annual banquet, scheduled for May 2. This year’s inductees exemplify the rich sporting culture of Prince Albert, a community that has produced remarkable athletes, coaches, and builders who have contributed significantly to local sports.
On February 6, the Hall of Fame officials announced the 2026 class at the Ches Leach Lounge, bringing together representatives, fans, and community leaders. The list of honorees includes sprinter Katelyn Lehner, racquetball player Joel Mihilewicz, and multi-sport athlete Leah (Guidinger) Tyree. These individuals are celebrated not just for their athletic prowess but also for their dedication to the community.
Coaching and Community Contributions
Among the inductees is former Prince Albert Minto coach Tim Leonard, who played a crucial role in shaping young athletes. Alongside him is Randy Emmerson, a longtime basketball and volleyball coach, known for his commitment to developing local talent. Their contributions extend beyond victories; they’ve nurtured a culture of excellence and sportsmanship within the community.
Another significant addition to the 2026 class is Carol Soles. A dedicated organizer, fundraiser, and volunteer, Soles has been a cornerstone of local sporting initiatives. Her tireless efforts have helped to elevate the visibility of sports in Prince Albert, highlighting the importance of community involvement in athletic success.
The class also includes businessman Rusty Clunie, who was instrumental in founding and building the Prince Albert River Riders football program. Clunie’s influence has extended into various infrastructure projects, including the successful Friday Night Lights campaign, showcasing the intersection of sports, business, and community welfare.
Celebrating Team Achievements
Adding to the excitement, the 2013-14 Prince Albert Mintos, who claimed the Telus Cup in a thrilling three-overtime victory over the Chateauguay Grenadiers, will also be honored. Under the leadership of Coach Ken Morrison, this team not only achieved remarkable success on the ice, but also fostered lasting connections within the community. The roster featured talents like Teal Sobkowicz, who later made a name for himself with the Melfort Mustangs, and Connor Ingram, a goaltender currently playing for the Edmonton Oilers.
Inspiration for Future Generations
Barry Mihilewicz, the president of the Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame, emphasized the importance of recognizing local athletes, coaches, and builders. By honoring these individuals, the Hall hopes to inspire future generations to pursue their dreams in sports.
“When you see how others have achieved greatness, it fuels your own aspirations,” Mihilewicz observed. He believes that every athlete, coach, and builder had someone who inspired them along their journey, a testament to the supportive network that exists in the world of sports.
Acknowledging Ongoing Contributions
While this year’s class is diverse and impressive, Mihilewicz spoke candidly about the nomination process. He noted that many deserving individuals might be overlooked simply because they go un-nominated. “There are still so many fantastic contributors to our sporting landscape who deserve recognition,” he stated, urging the community to step forward and champion deserving candidates for future classes.
All inductees will be formally recognized at the Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame banquet, offering a chance to celebrate their accomplishments and the rich history of sports in the region. In the lead-up to the awards banquet, the Daily Herald plans to publish profiles highlighting each inductee, providing fans with an in-depth look at the lives and achievements of these local legends. The recognition of their efforts not only honors their legacies but also serves to inspire the next generation of athletes in Prince Albert.
