Golden’s Prestigious Achievement
In a remarkable recognition of journalistic excellence, Golden has joined the ranks of an illustrious list of past winners, which includes renowned figures such as Skip Bayless, Blackie Sherrod, and Randy Galloway. This accolade highlights the enduring tradition of outstanding sports journalism and the impact it has on the community.
Acknowledging Teamwork
Upon receiving this honor, Golden expressed his gratitude, stating, “It’s a real honor to be mentioned with such great journalists.” He emphasized that this achievement is not solely his, but rather a reflection of the collective effort of his colleagues at the Statesman newsroom. Golden’s humility shines through as he shares the spotlight with the “incomparable” team that supports him in every endeavor.
Celebrating Fellow Journalists
In addition to Golden’s recognition, Andrew Monaco, the esteemed voice of the Texas A&M Aggies, was awarded the title of Texas Sportscaster of the Year. Furthermore, the accolade for sportswriter of the year was claimed by Mike Finger from the San Antonio News-Express in 2025. This year marks a significant milestone as it is the first time since Kirk Bohls—who previously won or shared this honor for three consecutive years from 2018 to 2020—that a writer from the Statesman has received the NMSA award.
Golden’s Distinctive Style
Known for his incisive wit and his readiness to challenge authority, Golden has become a prominent figure in sports journalism. His work has garnered accolades from various prestigious organizations, including the Associated Press Sports Editors and the Texas Managing Editors. A Tyler native and graduate of the University of Texas at Tyler, he has made significant contributions to sports media while also fulfilling his role as an educator, teaching at the University of Texas on multiple occasions.
The Role of NSMA
The National Sports Media Association (NSMA) plays a crucial role in recognizing excellence within the sports media landscape. Each year, its members cast their votes for the best sportswriter and sportscaster in each state and Washington, D.C. With nearly 1,000 members, the NSMA aims not only to honor outstanding contributions but also to preserve the knowledge and history of sports media for future generations. The association also maintains a Hall of Fame, celebrating the pioneers and leaders of the field.
Celebrating Achievement
The winners of these esteemed awards are celebrated annually during a special weekend in June in North Carolina. The recognition of Golden and his peers represents the seventh occasion that a Statesman sportswriter has been honored by the NSMA, a testament to the high caliber of journalism that has emerged from this organization since its founding in 1959. The legacy of excellence in sportswriting continues to thrive, inspiring new generations of journalists and sports enthusiasts alike.
