UIndy Dominates GLVC Swim & Dive Weekly Honors

Indianapolis Athletes of the Week Shine at U.S. Open

In an exciting announcement from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), Indianapolis has recognized two outstanding talents in the swimming and diving categories. Kirabo Namutebi, a junior from Kampala, Uganda, and Jan Schmidt, a freshman from Stuttgart, Germany, have been named the Athletic Solutions/GLVC Athletes of the Week for their impressive performances. Their achievements not only highlight their personal dedication but also illustrate the strength of the Indianapolis swimming and diving program.

Kirabo Namutebi: Dominating the Women’s Swimming Scene

Kirabo Namutebi, who competes in the freestyle events, has emerged as a formidable athlete this season. Her recent performances underscore her prowess in the pool, particularly during a recent matchup against Eastern Illinois. In that meet, she touched the wall first in both the 50 Freestyle (22.59) and the 100 Freestyle (52.50). These times have positioned her at the top of Division II rankings—first in the 50 Free and eighth in the 100 Free. Her remarkable talent earned her third Athlete of the Week accolade, having previously claimed the title on November 6 and October 23 of this season.

In addition to her individual victories, Namutebi played a crucial role in team relays, contributing to first-place finishes in the 200 Medley and 200 Free Relay events against Eastern Illinois. Furthermore, her success is showcased by her performance at the recent U.S. Open, where she placed 26th in the 50 Free (25.82) in a Long Course Meters (LCM) pool. With a major in Sports Management, Namutebi’s success in the pool aligns with her academic dedication, painting her as not only an athlete but a student of her craft.

Jan Schmidt: Freshman Phenomenon in Men’s Swimming

On the men’s side, Jan Schmidt made waves with his recent accomplishments, earning his first career Athlete of the Week award. Competing primarily in Fly and Individual Medley events, Schmidt showcased incredible skill during the meet against Eastern Illinois, where he clinched the top spots in both the 1000 Free (9:13.49) and the 100 Butterfly (49.49). His performance in the 1000 Free not only secured him victory but also ranked him seventh in Division II, where he achieved the NCAA B-cut mark—a significant milestone for any collegiate swimmer.

Schmidt’s experience at the U.S. Open also highlighted his growing capabilities, where he finished 26th in the 400 IM (4:34.38) amidst a highly competitive field. As a Business Administration and Management major, Schmidt demonstrates a balance between rigorous academic pursuits and athletic excellence, further enhancing his profile as a rising talent in sports.

Team Performance and Program Highlights

Both athletes have contributed significantly to the Indianapolis swimming and diving team, resulting in a strong showing at both the U.S. Open and their dual meet against Eastern Illinois. While the U.S. Open did not keep formal team scores, it provided valuable experience against a diverse range of competitors. The recent victories against Eastern Illinois showcase the team’s strength, culminating in a resounding 193-62 win for the women and a compelling 176-86 victory for the men.

Looking Ahead

As the season progresses, both Namutebi and Schmidt are poised to make even more significant impacts in their respective events. Their achievements serve as an inspiration for their teammates and showcase the depth of talent within the Indianapolis athletics program. With the conference season heating up, fans and supporters eagerly await what these remarkable athletes will accomplish next as they strive for excellence both in and out of the pool.
