The Empowerment Cup 2025: A Celebration of Talent and Tenacity

An Unforgettable Finale

The Empowerment Cup 2025 culminated at the Dakshineswar Young Men’s Association Ground, where SSB emerged as champions after an exhilarating match against UKSC. This tournament, launched on November 22, was more than just a series of games; it was a vibrant showcase of talent, grit, and determination, specifically designed for grassroots-level footballers—particularly young women who often lack the necessary resources and infrastructure to shine.

A Platform for Grassroots Football

The Empowerment Cup was conceived to provide an opportunity for players who possess unparalleled passion and dedication to the sport but struggle with access to proper facilities. It aimed to elevate women in sports, allowing them to exhibit their skills and determination under the spotlight. Beyond the competitive spirit, the tournament became a narrative of empowerment, allowing young women to step into roles traditionally dominated by men.

Thrilling Matches and Memorable Moments

The final day of the tournament also showcased a third-place playoff between Nita FA and JSSPS, with JSSPS clinching victory. Sanjana Oraon was awarded Player of the Match for her outstanding performance. The matches throughout the tournament were marked by powerful narratives—two married footballers stood out in the opening game, breaking societal stereotypes and challenging conventional norms about women in sports. The entire tournament was a testament to these athletes’ relentless fight for respect and recognition.

Voices of Experience

Conversations about the current state of Bengal football were prevalent during the tournament. Former India footballer Ranjan Chaudhuri expressed a sentiment shared by many: “Bengal football jekhane chilo okhanei dariye ache.” His commentary captured the essence of a stagnating state that, with the right infrastructure and opportunities, could see young women outshine their male counterparts. Coaches and prominent figures echoed similar thoughts, emphasizing the need for investment in women’s sports for a brighter future.

The Spirit of the Game

Throughout the tournament, emotion ran high. From the screams of joy to tears of frustration, each moment encapsulated the spirit of competitive sports. Spectators flocked from across the city, with more than 100,000 attendees supporting the players. A couple from Serampore made daily appearances, cheering for their favorite teams. This communal spirit radiated across the ground, making it a celebration of resilience and camaraderie. A notable quote that resonated with many participants was, “Mujhe khelna hai, bahar nahi jana,” expressing an unwavering desire to play through adversities.

Recognition and Celebrations

The closing ceremony was a highlight, featuring a heartfelt speech by RevSportz Bangla Content Head Agnijit Sen, followed by an inspiring address from Revsportz co-founder Sharmistha Gooptu. Sunita Munda of SSB not only earned Player of the Match in the final but also tied with Sanjana Oraon as the tournament’s top scorers, both netting five goals. The Best Goalkeeper accolade went to Manju from SSB, while Kai Rumi of the runners-up, UKSC, was named Player of the Tournament, acknowledging her outstanding performances throughout the event.

A Token of Empowerment

As a nod to their achievements, all awardees received Ten X You kits from Sharmistha Gooptu, symbolizing the support and recognition they deserve as aspiring athletes. The post-match presentation was filled with accolades and praise from dignitaries, who unanimously advocated for the continuation of this vibrant tournament in upcoming years.

The Essence of Empowerment

In her impactful remarks, Sharmistha Gooptu emphasized the essence of empowerment, stating, “Empowerment is about young girls freely playing on the field in shorts without worrying about being stared at or objectified. Empowerment is about being free and being yourself.” This statement captured the core philosophy of the Empowerment Cup, as it seeks to challenge societal norms while fostering a space where young women can thrive as athletes.

Through the Empowerment Cup, an extraordinary journey was mapped out—combining passion, resilience, and a community that rallied together to uplift and celebrate women in sports.
