Celebrating Coach Mike Leavitt: A Legacy of 100 Wins and Meaningful Mentorship
Milestone Achievement
This year marks a significant milestone for Coach Mike Leavitt at Viewpoint Middle School, where he celebrated his 100th career victory as head coach of the junior high boys’ basketball team. This achievement is not merely about the number of wins; it symbolizes his dedicated efforts to create a lasting culture of teamwork, respect, and growth both on and off the court.
A Dual Role: Teacher and Coach
Beyond his coaching duties, Coach Leavitt is a dedicated educator. He teaches social studies while also shaping the character of his students. He believes that the essence of coaching and teaching lies in nurturing young individuals. “As teachers, we are shaping the citizens for tomorrow. How we act, what we say, and how we treat each other matters,” Coach Leavitt emphasizes. His commitment to instilling strong values reflects in his interactions with both his players and students.
The Team Philosophy
Coach Leavitt believes in a simple yet profound team philosophy:
- Defend without fouling
- Play for each other
- Work hard and have fun
“I feel like if we do all of these well, we will be successful,” says Coach Leavitt. He places great importance on every player’s contribution to the team, highlighting the need for “buy-in” from all members, including those who may not often see significant playing time.
Experience and Achievements
Coach Leavitt, now in his fifth year at Viewpoint Middle School, boasts an impressive 23 years of coaching experience, with 19 years as a head coach. His journey began in Las Vegas, and over the last 15 years, he has built an outstanding record of 277 wins to just 34 losses. His accolades include eight district titles at Timberline and five at Viewpoint, illustrating his ability to foster winning teams.
Academic Excellence
Success in the classroom is equally important to Coach Leavitt. He has high expectations for his athletes, mandating a minimum GPA of 3.0—an entire point higher than what the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) requires. Farrah Hudson, a mother of a current team member, notes how education is prioritized alongside athletics: “Grades and education are a high priority as he is also the AP World Geography teacher.”
Early Morning Practices
To maximize both academic and athletic performance, Coach Leavitt schedules practices at 6 a.m. every morning. While this may seem extreme, he finds that many players continue to wake up early even after the season ends. This structured routine allows them to focus on their studies or pursue personal training later in the day. Hudson observes that despite the rigorous demands, players learn the significance of discipline and focus.
Data-Driven Coaching
In Coach Leavitt’s strategy, data plays a crucial role. “We take very detailed stats and discuss these stats with the players regularly,” he explains, underpinning his decision-making process. By examining performance metrics, he enables players to understand their roles better and refine their skills.
Emphasis on Sportsmanship
Coach Leavitt is equally passionate about instilling sportsmanship among his players. He teaches athletes how to handle both wins and losses with grace, reinforcing the values of integrity and respect on and off the court. “We respect the game and our opponent,” he insists, emphasizing that these lessons extend beyond sports.
The Power of Relationships
For Coach Leavitt, coaching transcends mere wins and losses; it’s about building lasting relationships. “The number one reason why I coach is because of relationships,” he says. The friendships forged with players and assistant coaches remain a highlight of his career, emphasizing that these connections often endure well beyond their time together on the court.
A Beloved Figure
The affection and respect Coach Leavitt garners from his players mirror the idealized portrayals found in inspirational sports movies. Hudson captures the sentiment well: “Coach Leavitt is beloved and respected by all his players.” Many former athletes return to share nostalgic memories of their time under his guidance, illustrating the profound impact he has made.
Creating a Family Atmosphere
In his coaching philosophy, Coach Leavitt strives to create a family-like environment where every individual feels valued. “We create a family-like atmosphere where everyone feels as important as the next person,” he states, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and teamwork.
An Inspirational Leader
With his unwavering commitment to education and athletics, Coach Leavitt has not only cultivated a winning basketball program but has also inspired countless students and athletes. His legacy intertwines academic rigor with athletic achievement, creating a holistic approach to mentorship that benefits young individuals both in school and in life.
